TriHealth Bridge

March 04, 2022

Women's History Month is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to United States History. This year's Women's History Month theme is both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and a recognition of the thousands of ways women of all cultures have provided healing and hope throughout history.

History of Women's History Month
The actual celebration of Women's History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women's contributions to culture, history, and society, organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a "Real Woman" essay contest, and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa.

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women's History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year (1981), passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later (1987), the National Women's History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March, thus, creating Women's History Month.

International Women's Day
Although Women's History Month did not begin until 1987 in the United States, International Women's Day, a global celebration of women's economic, political, and social achievements, took place well before this time – commencing March 8, 1911. Many countries around the world celebrate this day with demonstrations, educational initiatives, and customs such as presenting women with gifts and flowers.

TriHealth Women Leaders
TriHealth's founding was established by powerful women in the Greater Cincinnati area. The Sisters of Charity and Methodist Deaconesses served the Cincinnati community with passion and purpose. TriHealth women today still serve in this capacity, paving the way in both our healthcare system and their respective communities, working tirelessly to provide healing and promote hope.

This year, TriHealth would like to celebrate Women's History Month by recognizing some of our women leaders and clinicians who are making a significant impact. Please click on the following links to view their spotlight:
