Getting Healthcare Right
TriHealth Achieves Magnet Designation/Re-designation at 10 Locations!
As you may recall, this spring, Magnet appraisers from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) conducted comprehensive virtual site surveys in our Bethesda North and Good Samaritan regions involving more than 90 unit tours and six days of interviews with nearly 1,000 TriHealth team members and leaders. And I’m thrilled to share that last week, our nursing, hospital, and ambulatory leaders and team members gathered for the long-anticipated call from the ANCC, officially announcing that TriHealth was, once again, awarded Magnet designation as a System – a truly extraordinary achievement!

Magnet is the internationally recognized “gold standard” of nursing excellence awarded by the ANCC – and fewer than 8% of healthcare facilities in the U.S. have met the rigorous Magnet standards, with even fewer achieving Magnet System designation, as is the case with TriHealth. This puts TriHealth in the top ten percent of U.S. healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing staff excellence, and research and innovation in professional nursing practice! Evidence-based research shows that Magnet-recognized hospitals and ambulatory care sites consistently demonstrate lower nursing turnover, better clinical outcomes, lower mortality rates, fewer patient falls and medication errors, and higher patient and family satisfaction.

Good Samaritan Endoscopy Center North (ECN), Good Samaritan Surgery Center West, and McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital each received Magnet designations for the first time! And Bethesda Arrow Springs, Bethesda Butler Hospital, Bethesda North Hospital, Bethesda Surgery Center, Cardiac Rehab at TriHealth Fitness, Good Samaritan Hospital, and Good Samaritan Western Ridge – all achieved Magnet re-designations for another four years!

Magnet appraisers consistently cited impressive examples of our best-in-class nursing practices, values in action, and exceptional clinical outcomes, across our facilities that set TriHealth apart, noting the following:
  • Strong nurse-physician relationships
  • Leadership development initiatives, including innovative strategies for staff recognition and succession planning, resulting in many nursing leaders promoted from within TriHealth
  • Financial support/resources provided to staff during COVID through the Team Member Resource Center, including childcare and emergency financial assistance, incentive bonuses for extra shifts, nursing salary adjustments and workforce bonuses
And appraisers called out the many words of praise they heard during interviews from nursing team members about their work experience and the patient-care environment at TriHealth, including: Rewarding, Caring, Supportive, a Family/Partnership, Excellent, Brave, Enduring, Compassionate, Collaborative, Amazing, and Encouraging.

Heartfelt congratulations and deep thanks go out to our more than 3,000 TriHealth nurses, their leaders, and fellow team members whose talents, hard work, commitment to excellence, and unwavering dedication to our patients resulted in these exceptional Magnet achievements across our system! Together, they demonstrate in living color the value of the TriHealth Way and what it means to be ONE Team, TriHealth STRONG!!!

COVID Update
While the highly contagious BA.5 subvariant is keeping the majority of counties in our Tri-State region in the COVID “High” risk category based on CDC criteria, we are encouraged that severe illness and hospitalizations remain stable and low by comparison to previous surges. Over the past week, new COVID inpatient cases at TriHealth remained relatively constant with 33 COVID inpatients and two on ventilators (see sidebar graphic). We continue to monitor the situation, along with the region’s other health systems, and remain well prepared to elevate response measures in the unlikely event it becomes necessary.

Team TriHealth Returns to Ride Cincinnati!
I’m excited to share that “Team TriHealth” will once again participate in this year’s Ride Cincinnati event following a two-year hiatus due to COVID. Ride Cincinnati is a grassroots cycling event that raises money for life-saving cancer research and treatment. In 2019, when Team TriHealth last participated, nearly 40 TriHealth physicians and team members joined Mark Witte and me on our TriHealth cycling team and together, we raised more than $8,000 to benefit patients and families of the TriHealth Cancer Institute!

This year’s Ride Cincinnati event will take place on Saturday, September 17. Mark Witte, Vice President of Clinical Service Lines, and I are again serving as Team TriHealth co-captains, and we enthusiastically invite you to join our team! All of the money we raise will, once again, support our TriHealth Cancer Institute, and will be used to help fund world-class cancer care and research that, ultimately, will result in better care and clinical outcomes for our patients! Anyone who registers to fundraise and ride with our TriHealth Team will receive a really cool TriHealth racing jersey (similar to the one pictured), as well as two tickets to an upcoming Cincinnati Reds game. Click here to sign up and learn more.

Thank you, as always, for living our values and demonstrating every day the power of the TriHealth Way! Together, we are leading the way to Get Healthcare Right – for our patients, for our community, and for each other!!
