TriHealth Bridge

October 18, 2022

Hi Team –

As a faith-based organization with a 170-year mission of service to those in need, TriHealth has a long history of caring for individuals and communities locally and across the globe impacted by severe hardship and tragedies.

Since announcing our partnership with the Cincinnati chapter of the American Red Cross last week to help support Hurricane Ian relief efforts, I’ve received a number of messages of thanks and support from our team members and physicians. As always, our TriHealth Team has quickly responded with great compassion and generosity to extend our healing mission to our neighbors, family, and friends in Florida and the Carolinas impacted by this devastating storm. And, I am pleased to announce that last week, TriHealth donated $25,000 to the Cincinnati Chapter of the American Red Cross to further assist in the ongoing hurricane relief and recovery efforts – in addition to the generous donations continuing to come in from our team members. Getting Healthcare Right
Forging Enduring Clinical Partnerships to Get Healthcare Right
Twenty-five years ago, TriHealth was formed through a partnership — a partnership between Good Sam and Bethesda. The bold vision that brought Good Sam and Bethesda together continues to drive us today, and is now referred to as “Getting Healthcare Right” — which means, consistently providing patients with the right care in the right place in our care continuum at the right time to achieve the right and best health outcomes for the right cost. And TriHealth is leading the way in doing this by continuing to build and leverage the right clinical partnerships to extend and strengthen our high-value network to help us accelerate our work of achieving the Triple Aim + One.

And now more than ever, these partnerships are making a real difference in the lives of the patients we serve, while setting TriHealth apart as the regional partner of choice for advancing world-class clinical care. Today, I want to devote a portion of my Weekly Update to showcasing some of our clinically innovative, best-in-class AND growing partnerships:
  • Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC): For nearly a decade, TriHealth has collaborated with CCHMC through the Cincinnati Children’s Fetal Care Center, one of a few comprehensive fetal care centers in the country specializing in the treatment of complex, rare, and life-threatening fetal conditions. Through this highly integrated partnership, Cincinnati Children’s provides expertise in fetal and newborn therapy, NICU care, and pediatric sub-specialty services – and TriHealth, with the largest and most respected group of maternal-fetal-medicine specialists in the region, provides expertise in obstetrics/maternal-fetal medicine. Patients from across the country now travel to Cincinnati to be cared for in this cutting-edge clinical program, which combines and integrates the best of our two organizations to deliver world-class care to both “healthy moms and sick babies.”
  • Beacon Orthopedics: This landmark joint venture is transforming the delivery of orthopedic care and sports medicine through breakthrough advancements in quality, affordability, and accessibility that offer patients the care and services they need, when and where they need it. In just a few short months, this partnership will assume responsibility for operating four orthopedic ambulatory surgery centers (two TriHealth and two Beacon centers) throughout the region and will collaborate with TriHealth in the management of our MSK/Orthopedics Service Line.
  • Mayfield Brain & Spine: TriHealth and Mayfield have collaborated for more than 80 years. The most recent expansion of our longstanding partnership resulted in the creation of a comprehensive Neurosciences Institute, which provides enhanced access to integrated state-of-the-art neurologic and surgical care for the brain, head, neck and spine, as well as advanced stroke care. This partnership has positioned Good Sam as the region’s center of excellence for the most advanced neurosurgical and stroke care.
  • Highland District Hospital: Earlier this year, TriHealth expanded its longstanding partnership with Highland District Hospital to provide on-site clinical OB/GYN services, following Highland’s decision to discontinue providing maternity and OB services. Patients seen in Highland clinics will deliver their babies at Bethesda North where we can provide better, safer maternity care for mom and baby. Through our partnership, the TriHealth Heart Institute also provides cardiovascular care in Highland County and we are exploring other ways to expand services locally to best serve county residents.
  • The Urology Group (TUG): Through this partnership, TUG provides comprehensive and seamless urological services to TriHealth patients, while enhancing communication and collaboration between TUG and TriHealth physicians. In doing so, we are able to close gaps in care, increase care coordination, and improve care quality and clinical outcomes. We are also partners in the TUG ambulatory surgery center.
  • Cleveland Clinic: This year, TriHealth also successfully launched its Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) program — representing the next step forward in our rapidly evolving Advanced Heart Failure Program at our destination TriHealth Heart Hospital. This milestone was made possible, in part, through an evolving collaboration with the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Kathryn O’Keefe, Surgical Director of TriHealth’s Mechanical Circulatory Support and LVAD Program, spent nearly a year completing LVAD fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic. And through this collaboration, Cleveland Clinic is now assisting the TriHealth Heart Institute to both identify and capitalize on new clinical opportunities to further advance and strengthen our cardiovascular care in the Greater Cincinnati region.
  • Anthem: To respond to growing employer and consumer demand for more affordable healthcare, four years ago, TriHealth and Anthem partnered to offer Blue Connection, a health plan and provider network aimed at improving health, lowering cost, and delivering an exceptional patient experience. Blue Connection is now offered by more than 25 local employers, including TriHealth, with over 30,000 individuals enrolled in the plan and membership growing every year!
Just as twenty-five years ago with the formation of TriHealth, we are continuing to explore additional ways to expand and deepen these existing partnerships. At the same time, we are opportunistically creating similar new strategic and clinical partnerships – all to deliver on our promise to Get Healthcare Right by delivering on the Triple Aim of better care, better health, and better value for every patient we serve!!

Hospice of Cincinnati Among 1st in Nation to Receive End-of-Life Care Certification for Heart Failure Patients by American Heart Association
I’m thrilled to announce that Hospice of Cincinnati (HOC) has become one of the first
organizations in the nationand the first in Cincinnati – to earn Palliative/Hospice Heart Failure Certification from the American Heart Association! The certification establishes an evidence-based framework for evaluating palliative and hospice care agencies against the American Heart Association’s rigorous science-based standards for heart failure patients.

This accomplishment reflects HOC’s commitment to clinical excellence and assures that patients and families receive end-of-life care that follows the latest evidence-based guidelines. The certification builds upon the implementation of Hospice of Cincinnati’s Advanced Cardiac Care Program (ACCP) in April 2021. ACCP addresses the unique end-of-life needs of people with advanced cardiac disease.

Since its implementation, the ACCP has had a significant impact on preventing unnecessary emergency department visits and inpatient stays. The ACCP has shown a 23.3% reduction in hospitalization rates in the last 30 days of life, a 50% reduction in ED visits in the last 30 days of life, and a 365% increase in deaths at home versus in the hospital setting. Patients and their caregivers have expressed gratitude for patients being able to live out their remaining days more comfortably at home, with fewer emergency medical interventions and surrounded by the people and things they love.

Congratulations to Gayle Mattson, President and CEO of HOC Navigators and the entire team at Hospice of Cincinnati on this significant accomplishment which is helping TriHealth Get Healthcare Right!

Recognition Awards to Honor Team Members and Physicians this Week
Every year, TriHealth honors our team members and physicians who are celebrating milestone service anniversaries of 20 years or more at our Service Awards “Dinner.” The event also recognizes and celebrates team members who have received a Living Our Values award in the past year.

This coming Thursday, we will host our Service Awards event at the Starlite Drive-In in Amelia to recognize 392 total honorees (368 celebrating milestone work anniversaries and 24 recipients of the Living Our Values award). Honorees and their guests will enjoy dinner, snacks, and a gift at the event while watching “Field of Dreams” at the drive-in. Stay tuned for next week’s event recap and photos from this special team member celebration!

At the end of the campaign, one lucky winner will be drawn to receive the grand prize of $2,500! COVID Update
COVID transmission rates continue to decrease both regionally and here at TriHealth, with ALL 14 counties now at LOW transmission levels (see sidebar graphic for details). We continue to monitor transmission and case rates and are hopeful that the decreasing trend will continue, allowing us to soon relax some of our masking requirements in non-high-risk clinical areas.

We have so much to be proud of at TriHealth – and at the top of this list is YOU, our incredible team members and physicians who are behind every effort and achievement that is helping us lead the way in Getting Healthcare Right! Thank you for your service – and for all you do to help us provide the best care possible, always!
