Volunteer Services has awarded two $2,000 scholarships to Young Samaritan volunteers at Good Samaritan: Joseph Mauch of St. Xavier High School and AnneMarie Amlung of Princeton High School.
Joseph Mauch will attend the University of Dayton and plans to pursue a degree in biology and pre-medicine. Joseph was a leader among his peers at Good Samaritan while volunteering as an intern and leader in the Young Samaritan program.
Joseph said, "Being able to relate, organize and lead a group such as volunteers was an honor and a blessing."
In his scholarship essay Joseph also shared, "First and foremost, working at Good Samaritan solidified my desire to become a physician. Seeing the great work the doctors do proved to me that working cooperatively with others to help heal and rehabilitate those in need is exactly what I want to do."
AnneMarie Amlung is attending Lee University in Tennessee to become a pre-physician's assistant. AnneMarie shared with us a touching story of a man she helped whose wife was in surgery.
She said, "All my life, I wanted to do something with my life to make a difference in those of others. I had begun to think this meant doing extraordinary things, changing the world, saving lives. However, my time at Good Samaritan Hospital has taught me something quite the opposite. I learned that I can make a difference wherever I am, as long as my heart is in my work, and I show love to everyone around me."
Winners were chosen based on number of volunteer hours, grade point average, application responses, reference letters and their essays. In order to apply, active volunteers must have completed a minimum of 100 hours and provide proof of acceptance into a college of their choice.
The Good Samaritan Guild funded these two scholarship awards.
