TriHealth is expected to run out of our sodium chloride supply in the next couple days.
As a result, TriHealth pharmacies have started to stockpile and dispense patient-specific infusion bags of sodium chloride for Bethesda North and Good Samaritan inpatient areas. Other changes have also gone into effect.
Auto-verification ability in EPIC for sodium chloride has been removed; pharmacists will continue to evaluate patients and contact providers with recommended options.
As of Thursday, Jan. 30, P and T Committee chairs have granted emergency approval for the following auto-substitution(s). The pharmacist will change these orders at order verification/order entry.
Ordered |
Auto Substitute |
Sodium Chloride 0.9% (NS 0.9%) 20 mL/hr or less/KVO |
Sodium Chloride 0.45% (1/2NS) At same rate |
Good Samaritan and Bethesda North logistics departments will continue to supply emergency departments, operating rooms and off-site areas with sodium chloride 0.9% 250 mL, 500 mL and 1,000 mL infusion bags.
