It is with truly mixed emotions that we announce the upcoming retirement of Mary Irvin, RN, MSN, MBA, NEA-BC, our Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. After 45 years of exceptional nursing work and leadership, Mary has made the decision to retire in order to begin the next chapter of her life to slow down and enjoy life with her husband, Dave, her two sons and first grandson, C.J. But we will all miss Mary, both personally and professionally.
For those who might not know Mary as well, allow us to share briefly some details about her impressive career. Mary’s nursing career started in 1974 as a PCA at Good Samaritan Hospital, upon graduation in 1977 she began working as a staff nurse on a surgical unit and moved quickly into the Intensive Care Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital. During the late ‘80s and ‘90s, she held progressive leadership positions from Assistant Nurse Manager, Nurse Manager and Senior Nurse Manager. Mary was selected as Chief Nursing Officer at Good Samaritan Hospital in 2000 and then was named TriHealth’s Chief Nursing Executive in 2011.
Everywhere Mary went she taught other nurses how to achieve excellence in patient care. She is an outstanding nurse, teacher and leader. Her unique ability to foster, support and personally model collaborative relationships among her nurses, physicians and other care givers for the betterment of patient care never stopped. Excellence in quality patient care has been her life’s passion.
Mary was awarded the Good Samaritan College of Nursing’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008, the Ohio Organization Nurse Executive’s Nursing Leadership Award in 2009 and the College of Mt. St. Joseph’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. Nursing at TriHealth has thrived under Mary’s leadership achieving Magnet Designation in July 2012, one of only 27 health care organizations nationally and two in Ohio to achieve system designation. Mary is quick to point out that every achievement of TriHealth Nursing is because of the nursing team at TriHealth and their exceptional commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
Mary will retire late summer or early fall, as she has agreed to provide transitional leadership while her successor is selected and onboarded. We are beginning a national search for her replacement.
We look forward to celebrating with Mary and all of you as we get closer to her retirement date. In the meantime, please congratulate Mary and wish her well, while thanking her for her numerous contributions to TriHealth’s success over the years.
