Don't get stuck on the side of the road in cold temperatures; use these tips to winter-proof your car and get safely to and from work.
Check your windshield wipers, antifreeze levels and oil. If necessary, replace oil with winter-grade oil.
Check your tires for adequate tread and air pressure.
Ensure your fuel tank is at least half full to prevent condensation build up in the fuel tank, which can cause gas lines to freeze. Having extra fuel also can be critical, if you're stuck in traffic or driving in extreme weather conditions.
Keep emergency items in your vehicle, including:
- Rain gear
- Extra clothing (hats, gloves, socks, etc.)
- Extra food (crackers, granola bars, etc.)
- A fully charged cellphone
- Flashlights and extra batteries
- A small bag of sand (for traction)
- A snow shovel
- A brightly colored cloth to use as a flag
- Bottled water
