Donors to the Bethesda Hospital Annual Fund have a new choice for directing their gift this year.
A new scholarship program has been established in the memory of Liu "Ming" Xiaoming through the generosity of her loving husband, Dr. Xinhao Wang, devoted daughters, Melissa and Ellen, and many close friends.
A long-time Bethesda radiology team member, Ming received care through Bethesda North's Ambulatory Treatment Center (now part of the TriHealth Cancer Institute). Her family and friends wanted to honor Ming's commitment to education by supporting team members of the radiology department and the Cancer Institute in their educational goals.
Melissa and Ellen recently shared their gratitude for their mother's care and reasons for wanting to establish the Liu "Ming" Xiaoming Scholarship:
Born and raised in China, our mom instilled in us a love for Chinese culture - ranging from the food and language to traditional Chinese music to modern television shows. She was an elegant dancer, whether it was on stage or on the carpet in our living room. She was fearless in the face of household pests, but unreasonably wary of dogs. She was an occasionally experimental cook who took critiques in stride, and an avid proponent of reading - especially nonfiction. She strove to teach us the value of finding balance in life - between responsibility and desire; between exceeding our potential and excessive expectations; between dreaming big and working hard.
Last year, our mom passed away due to a brain tumor. She had a difficult last six months, but before that she had three good years. In those years we visited China multiple times, she stopped for a quick tour of South Korea, and we went to the blue ocean shores of Cancun. She watched both of us graduate from high school, and we got to celebrate three birthdays with her. In a letter to us, she wrote that she was happy for that time. That we were able to share that time with her was in no small part thanks to you and the work you do every day at Bethesda. Our mother worked here for many years, and we give you this donation in her name. Thank you for taking care of her.
