Hi Team!

Well, our Reds may be off to a slow start, but at TriHealth, we just hit one out of the park, so I am sending this Monthly Update a few days early to share some breaking news! I am excited and proud to share that IBM Watson Health™ announced this week it has selected TriHealth as one of the 15 Top Health Systems in the nation! This recognition is in addition to last month’s news that Good Samaritan and Bethesda North hospitals were named to IBM Watson Health’s List of 2018 Top 100 Hospitals in the U.S.! And TriHealth is one of only two health systems in Ohio to achieve this double honor – and one of just a handful nationwide!

Each year, IBM Watson Health (formerly Truven Analytics) identifies the 15 top-performing health systems in the U.S. based on overall system performance, as measured by a balanced scorecard of metrics derived from publicly available clinical, operational, financial, and patient satisfaction data. Ultimately, the study and associated ranking is intended to demonstrate the strong correlation between healthcare system integration and exceptional performance.

What’s especially meaningful about this achievement is that it directly validates the importance of our vision and strategy to transform TriHealth into a fully integrated, high-performing system that gets healthcare right by delivering on the Triple Aim – better care, better health, and better value. And, the performance measures used to select the 15 Top Health Systems are nearly identical to the ones we use to track and report our own progress on our journey from good to great.

And that’s not all! We also learned that three TriHealth hospitals (Good Samaritan, Bethesda North, and Butler) received “A” grades for patient safety this week – the highest marks possible – by Leapfrog Group. McCullough-Hyde was not rated due to insufficient sample data size. These high marks signify our hospitals are among the best in the country for preventing patient harm and meeting the highest safety standards!

Under any circumstances, these accolades would be impressive. What makes them even more significant is that they are occurring at a time of unprecedented change and new challenges, as our industry is undergoing a fundamental shift in how healthcare is financed and delivered. Without a doubt, all credit for our remarkable progress lies with YOU – our leaders, team members, nurses, physicians and volunteers – who live our values and bring The TriHealth Way to life each day, one patient at a time. Because of your dedication and hard work, TriHealth is increasingly being recognized in our community and our industry as a model of healthcare excellence on all fronts! We’ll be building on this momentum in the months to come, with lots of continuing development, communications, recognition and celebrations. The following is a preview of what’s ahead in support of our work to get healthcare right for all those we serve.

TriHealth Leaders to Participate in Next LDI: May 2-3

Next Tuesday and Wednesday (May 2 and 3), your TriHealth administrative, nursing and physician leaders will again be off-site to participate in our eighth Leadership Development Institute (LDI). As you know, these LDIs are central to our work of bringing a consistent, evidence-based approach to leading, serving and delivering care to TriHealth’s more than 140 hospitals, ambulatory campuses and physician practices.

Our five-year journey to build this unified, high-performing TriHealth culture – The TriHealth Way of Leading, Serving and Delivering Care – has been intentionally staged to focus first on team member engagement and service excellence through the introduction and adoption of evidence-based leadership and service practices. Now, two years into this journey – and making real gains for our team members, physicians and those we serve – we are ready to advance to the next stage of the TriHealth Way… Delivering Care.

Like the Hippocratic Oath, this phase of our work starts with “First Do No Harm,” by delivering the safest possible care and, ultimately, becoming a “High Reliability Organization” (HRO). This next phase of our TriHealth Way will be introduced at our May LDI, and will be titled “Leading the Way to Zero,” which means Zero Patient Harm! Day One of the May LDI will serve as the first of what will become a regular event – our Annual Safety Summit. This inaugural summit will feature sessions on the “Science of Safety,” as well as an introduction to evidence-based safety practices. We are also planning to conduct safety training for all team members, which will take place later this year. Your leader will share more information with you on our high reliability work, including plans for team members’ safety training, after the LDI.

Celebrate TriHealth and Your Many Contributions During National Hospital & National Nurse Week: May 6-12

With all the recent national recognition affirming the marked progress we’ve made on our journey from good to great, we have A LOT to celebrate!! And that’s exactly what we’ll be doing in recognition of National Hospital Week and National Nurses Week, which takes place May 6-12. Perfectly timed, this year’s week of celebrations gives us the opportunity to recognize and thank YOU – our invaluable TriHealth Team for all you do to make TriHealth GREAT! Look for more details starting next week on LinkNet.

Join Your System Leaders for our Next Series of Team Member Forums: May 8 – 17

I’m excited to share that the next round of quarterly Team Member Forums will take place May 8 – 17 – with both in-person and live video participation options available (click here to see schedule). Joining me will be TriHealth Chief Operating Officer, Gail Donovan, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kevin Joseph, and Chief Human Resources Officer, David Cook.

We’ll discuss our FY18 progress to-date – including updates on our Pillars Goals, the latest news on our Total Rewards program, and what’s ahead with the TriHealth Way. As always, we want to hear from you during these sessions – and we’ll be devoting plenty of time for discussion – so please bring your questions and feedback. Snacks, giveaways and other prizes will be available for those who join the conversation at these Forums.

Take the 2018 Team Member Engagement Survey: May 14 – 28

Over the past several years, TriHealth has taken very deliberate and targeted actions to strengthen our culture and improve our workplace based on your feedback. As a result, we’ve seen consistent and encouraging improvement in our Engagement Surveys, our Leadership Effectiveness Assessments (LEA), and our Patient Satisfaction (CAHPS) scores. While we’re pleased you feel our efforts are making a difference, we know the work is not done and need your continued feedback to keep the momentum going. Your next chance to give us your formal feedback takes place with our 2018 Team Member Engagement Survey, which will occur May 14 – 28. We look forward to hearing more about how you feel we’ve progressed and how we may continue to improve our culture, workplace and leadership moving forward. Look for a more detailed email from me in early May that will explain this year’s process and how to participate.

As you can see, we have a FUN and ACTION-PACKED month ahead with lots of opportunities to celebrate, share your thoughts and to listen and learn! I’d like to close by thanking all of you for making our 2018 Open Enrollment a huge success! All TriHealth team members took part, and we now look forward to you and your families making the most of the enhanced Total Rewards Program and Benefits available to help you live your best life!
