Though green is a prevalent color throughout the holiday season, going green isn't always on our minds. However, there are easy ways to reduce, reuse and recycle this time of year.

Here are five tips from the Sustainability department to keep you in Mother Nature's good graces this month.

1. Keep holiday lights out of landfills. Between Dec. 10 and Jan. 11, drop off old, worn and non-working strands at a Lowe's Home Improvement store in Cincinnati, or a participating Great Parks visitor center location in Hamilton County. (Note: a valid vehicle permit is required to enter parks. Fees are $10 for an annual pass and $3 for a daily pass.)

2. Reduce use of paper and plastic shopping bags. Thousands of them end up in landfills during the holidays. Instead, bring with you reusable cloth bags when holiday gift shopping.

3. Wrap gifts in recycled or reused paper and send homemade cards. Save and recycle wrapping paper, or create your own from up-cycled items.

4. Give quality gifts. Durable products last longer; cheaper, less durable items tend to wear out quickly and create more landfill waste.

5. Recycle Christmas trees. Most municipalities offer opportunities for residents to recycle their trees. Check your local government's website to find out how to participate.
