TriHealth Bridge

March 26, 2024

A year ago the world got a front row seat as the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills Athletic Trainers saved Damar Hamlin's life at Paycor Stadium. These Athletic Trainers would tell you they were just doing their jobs. So naturally that brings us to ask who are these health care heroes?

According to the National Athletic Trainers Association, "Athletic Trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals specifically trained in the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment & rehabilitation of medical conditions and emergent, acute and chronic injuries." Athletic Trainers graduate with formerly a Bachelors, now a Master's degree from a CAATE accredited University. Post graduation they sit for the Board of Certification test and then apply to licensure within each state.

One can find an ATs in a variety of settings including professional sports, Olympic Games colleges, high schools, industrial & corporate workplaces, armed forces, police/fire departments, performing arts and even health care systems including hospitals. TriHealth is honored to have a such a unique group within our Healthcare system. Our ATs are a part of our Sports Medicine Department. They work with local professionals, colleges and high schools in the city of Cincinnati including The Cincinnati Ballet, Xavier University, Mount St. Joseph University, Xavier University Club Sports, St. Xavier, Seton, Roger Bacon, Finneytown, Withrow, Walnut Hills, Clark Montessori, Norwood, Summit Country Day, Badin, Milford, Ross, Talawanda, Franklin County & Union County. TriHealth also has ATs in several other departments working with our physicians as physician extenders, in aquatic therapy, physical therapy clinics, the Health & Fitness Pavilion, and Event Medicine.

March is National Athletic Training Month. In honor of this, we would like to thank those Athletic Trainers employed by TriHealth for being an Essential Part of our Health Care Community. Your outreach to our communities is invaluable. So the next time you see an AT running out on the field, educating our patients or coaches, creating a rehabilitation program, or coming up with safety protocols to prevent our patients from harm, please make sure to thank them for their hard work and dedication to the wellbeing of the community.
