Thursday, May 12, 2022 will be the 202nd anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birthday, and GSC is celebrating! Join us at Bethesda North Hospital on International Nurse Day as our GSC admissions recruiters gather to celebrate the amazing nurses at Bethesda North with an appreciation table in the dining area during lunch.
Nightingale’s birthday was chosen to annually recognize how nurses contribute so much to the lives of people around the world. The founder of modern nursing, she fought protestations from her well-to-do parents who preferred she marry and raise children. Instead, she listened as a young woman to prompts she felt were coming from a higher source to reduce the suffering of others, and by age 16 believed it was her divine calling.
Nightingale’s accomplishments included demanding better hygiene and establishing the world’s first professional nursing school. The United States’ field hospitals during the Civil War were informed by Ms. Nightingale’s expertise and her report on hospital administration for the British Army initiated a complete restructure of the War Office’s administrative department.
With four times as many nurses in the United States as doctors totaling roughly 5 million, our hospitals are still short-handed and as many as 20% of nurses plan to retire in the next 3-5 years. If you are interested in making a difference and would like more information on our nursing or certification programs at Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science, please contact Admissions at 513-862-2631 or you can e-mail us at admissions@email.gscollege.edu.
