The Department of Graduate Medical Education (GME) sponsored the Third Annual Graduate Medical Education Residency Quality Safety Service Excellence Day (GME Residency QSS Excellence Days) on May 10, 2021.

GME is responsible for the professional post-graduate training of over 120 physicians annually in the specialties of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Family Medicine, Vascular Surgery Urogynecology, Sports Medicine, and Podiatry. Since 2018, GME training programs have developed over 40 patient safety and quality improvement projects here at TriHealth. Each project aims to improve the care delivered to patients in TriHealth hospitals and ambulatory practices. Many of these projects are truly team efforts with Nursing and Clinical Informatics and succeed due to these ongoing collaborations.

This year, GME dedicated this work to Dr. Richard M. Smith. Dr. Smith was a practicing pulmonologist who established the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Good Samaritan Hospital. His commitment to promoting patient safety and quality led to the establishment of a dedicated department of Quality and Patient Safety. His legacy continues to this day in these efforts throughout TriHealth as well as with the regional recognition of the Greater Cincinnati Health Collaborative Richard M. Smith Leadership in Patient Safety Award. Dr. David Wiltse, Medical Director of Pulmonary Services, provided the keynote dedication to Dr. Smith.

The first-place Dr. Richard M. Smith Award and Residents' Choice Award went to Dr. Hatem Elabd (Internal Medicine) for his project entitled “Hypertensive Home Noninvasive Ventilation Therapy Reduces Readmissions due to COPD Acute Exacerbation.” (click here to download poster)

The second-place award went to Dr. Sumayya Muneer (Internal Medicine) for her project entitled “Evaluating the Inappropriate Use of IV Antihypertensive Agents in the Setting of Inpatient Hypertensive Urgency.” (click here to download poster)
