Self-care does not have to be complicated, but it should include actions that promote your physical, mental and emotional health. “Self-Care | Made Simple” offers practical tips - easy, actionable steps you can take to enhance your personal well-being that follow three key pillars: Eat Well. Stress Less. Move More. This month’s focus is to “Eat Well” with this tip: Rethink your drink ―try an alternative to sugary beverages.

Beverages such as pop, juice, sweetened tea or coffee, and alcohol are some of the most common sources of “empty calories” – calories that provide zero nutritional value. Because they are high in calories but low in nutritional value, consuming these beverages can lead to overeating and weight gain as these drinks leave you feeling unsatisfied and still in need of nutrition to fuel the day. Before reaching for another pop or sweetened coffee, consider switching things up. Try an alternative such as low to no-calorie flavored waters, or unsweetened tea or coffee.

Maybe begin by reducing the amount of sugar used in teas or coffees. Or, perhaps try replacing one high-calorie beverage a day with a plain water, and gradually work on increasing your water intake. If you like juice, reduce your portion and mix it with zero-calorie sparkling water for a refreshing, bubbly drink.
