Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans. It’s also a time to recognize the central role African Americans have made and continue to make in the U.S. history.

Also known as African American History Month, the month-long recognition has evolved from “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans.

Woodson, a Harvard trained historian, and Jesse E. Moorland, a prominent minister, founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African descent. In 1926, they sponsored the national Negro History Week, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Schools and communities nationwide were inspired to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures.

As Trihealth continues to celebrate Black History Month, we are taking a look at today’s African American female trailblazers. Check out this listicle to find out more about some leading African American women who are making an impact on the modern world. These women represent excellence in entertainment, sports, politics and more. There are few names you might not recognize but should definitely know.

Not only are these women breaking new ground themselves, they are paving the way for all women of all races. They have shown bravery and integrity in their pursuits, breaking barriers particularly for other women of color.
