In a recent "5 Things You Need to Know Today" post from the Business Courier's Steve Watkins, he includes a special recognition for our healthcare heroes:
"I wrote last time about the need to tip restaurant workers who are dealing with a slowdown in their industry as well as potential exposure to customers with Covid. There’s another group that needs our gratitude, too.
Health care workers have to take a batch of precautions for every step in their jobs these days, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. That involves everything from wearing masks (many of which are far more exotic than the ones you and I wear) to the massive amount of cleaning that’s necessary and nearly constant hand-washing. Then there’s the possibility of getting exposed to patients who could have the virus.
And that doesn’t even include the health care workers who are working directly with Covid patients and seeing the heartbreaking situations of people who are suffering and can’t be around their loved ones.
I took my wife, Kelly, to Good Samaritan Hospital for a procedure on Monday (it was a colonoscopy, which is routine, but I can't believe no one has developed a better way to prep for it yet; that would be a billion-dollar idea). It all went fine. But as I waited and as we were getting ready to check out, I realized how much these health care workers go through every day. It’s remarkable. And they’re all in good spirits, seemingly all the time.
They don’t complain about the pandemic-driven changes, at least to patients. These are the most cheery, upbeat people you’ll see. And they’re dealing with sick people or people in pain all day.
It takes a special person to provide health care for a living. We should always recognize that group of people but especially now.
Everyday heroes definitely do walk among us."
