TriHealth Bridge

October 04, 2020

As TriHealth continues to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month this week, the Diversity and Inclusion team will spotlight some of our physicians who are making a difference within our organization and our community.

I immigrated from the Dominican Republic in 2010 to train in internal medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital. Cincinnati has since given me everything: I married my wife, also from the DR, in downtown Cincinnati, my two handsome boys were born at Good Samaritan, and I am blessed to train the future practicing physicians in Internal Medicine at Trihealth.

A little history, the Dominican Republic is “Where it all began.” In 1492 Cristopher Columbus embarked on his first voyage to the new world. As a result of his discoveries, he established the first city of the Americas, Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. A well-known Dominican poet wrote in his poem “Hay un pais en el mundo”: "There is a country in the world situated right in the sun’s path” "Situated in an improbable archipelago of sugar and alcohol.” Dominicans are as warm as the sun that bathes our beautiful tropical beaches and as sweet as the sugar cane that grows in our lands. Our hearts beat to merengue music and baseball.

During this month, we celebrate the achievements of the Hispanic Latino community in the USA. Within greater Cincinnati, we integrate a population of more than 60,000 that day in and day out, contribute to our economy, to the arts, to sports, and the health of our community. We mourn the lives we have lost to COVID this year, but we'll continue to celebrate the hard work of our Hispanic health heroes.

We will finish celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a Diversity Equity and Inclusion Town Hall Crucial Conversation on October 20th at 12:00 p.m. livestreamed on Facebook and the Bridge. The Town Hall will feature a panel of Hispanic leaders and team members sharing their experiences and stories. Be sure to tune in!

We are very blessed to have Dr Mena, especially in terms of his training resident doctors in the clinic.

Dr Mena took care of me when I was an inpatient a couple of years ago. He was so caring and personable. Then I had the pleasure of working with him again when my mother was in the hospital transitioning from cancer care to Hospice Home. It was a blessing to have him care for her. He took extra time to talk with her bedside and listen to her stories and share his own. He is truly one of a kind and we are blessed to have him in the Trihealth family!

A wonderful article, and I loved the profile on the Dominican Republic as well. We are so very blessed to have Dr. Mena! He is absolutely one of my favorite people/physician's. He is wonderful with patients, supportive of his residents, and his team members in the clinic. It is a privilege to work with him and the residents to help our GS FMC patients.!
