In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, three TriHealth hospitals – Bethesda North, Good Samaritan and McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital – were each awarded the highest rating for their efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the nation’s highest safety standards, according to the new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. Bethesda Butler Hospital was awarded a “B” safety grade for this reporting period, narrowly missing an “A”. TriHealth Evendale did not have enough publicly reported data to generate a Safety Grade. As a system, TriHealth again received the most "A" grades in Cincinnati, outpacing other local healthcare systems.

The Leapfrog Group, a Washington D.C-based organization aiming to improve healthcare quality and safety for consumers and purchasers, awarded these three hospitals with "A" grades based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care. The Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care. Nationally, only 30% of all hospitals achieve "A" ratings. TriHealth hospitals consistently earn “A” safety grades from Leapfrog, continuing as a local leader for hospital safety.

Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to approximately 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
