TriHealth Bridge

August 27, 2019

Thank you to everyone at TriHealth for welcoming another group of Military Medical Personnel participating in Operation Cincinnati SMART. SMART (Strategic Medical Asset Readiness Training) is a unique partnership between four Organizations (TriHealth, UCMC, Mercy, and The Christ Hospital) coordinated by the Health Collaborative. Cincinnati welcomed 30 Soldiers in the August 2019 group.

SPC Carabajal, a medic who is set to deploy for one year, stated “I saw my first gunshot patient here and learned how to better treat. Plus, I’m near perfect on my IV skills now thanks to the Nurses in the ED”.

TriHealth welcomed seven Soldiers including Combat Medics, Nursing, Radiology technician and a Behavioral Health Specialist. Their time included working in the ED, observing surgeries, participating in mock codes and getting hands on training with their civilian counterparts. SPC Bailey, a Radiology Technician, said “I knew it was a manikin I was performing CPR on, but this is the first time it felt like it was a real situation. It makes you really think about the small things you might miss. My head is now full of information. It was great to follow a Radiologist and I’ve seen so much I haven’t seen before”.

At the end of the two weeks, the SMART participants spent a final immersion day in the TriHealth Simulation and Education center. The day included several simulation scenarios to prepare the group to sustain lives in a combat zone. One of the medics set to deploy in the fall, SPC Garcia, said “The TriHealth Simulation team was awesome. The situations make you think on the spot and utilize all your team-even though most of us only met a week ago, we had to learn to work together as a team”. Col Brad Wenstrup visited the Soldiers as they participated in simulation scenarios. He was instrumental in bringing SMART to Cincinnati.

“TriHealth provided an incredible opportunity for the SMART participants. Our team members helped to provide hands on skills training to advance the Soldiers medical knowledge. This was an incredible group and they were so engaged and excited about every opportunity to learn. TriHealth team members had so many positive comments about working with the Soldiers”, observed Kim Morrow, the SMART coordinator for TriHealth.

A TriHealth surgeon stated “As a veteran myself, it was a pleasure and honor to have SPC Barkley as a student. I am happy to be supportive of such an important program”. A GSH Team member in Radiology stated “SPC Bailey is eager to learn and jumps in. He has seen so many things since he has been here. I hope we continue to have more Soldiers come through Radiology as this is a great experience for all of us!”.

Thank you to all the departments that welcomed Soldiers during their two weeks at TriHealth. If you are interested in learning more about SMART, please contact Kim Morrow

TriHealth will welcome our next group of SMART participants Nov 4-15.
