TriHealth Bridge

February 27, 2023

On January 2, 2023, the world got a front-row seat as the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills Athletic Trainers saved Damar Hamlin's life at Paycor Stadium. There have been multitudes of praise, honor and awards. But these Athletic Trainers would tell you they were just doing their jobs.

So naturally, that brings us to ask, who are these healthcare heroes & what does their job description entail?

According to the National Athletic Trainers Association, "Athletic Trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled healthcare professionals specifically trained in the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment & rehabilitation of medical conditions and emergent, acute and chronic injuries."

ATs graduate with formerly a Bachelor's degree, now a Master's degree from a CAATE accredited University. Upon completion, they are eligible to sit for the National Board of Certification examination. In Ohio, ATs may then apply for Licensure to practice. Annual Continuing Education is required to keep up with the medical community's latest breakthroughs and current treatments.

One can find ATs in various settings, including professional sports, Olympic and Para Olympic Games, colleges/universities, high schools, industrial workplaces, corporate workplaces, armed forces, police and fire departments, performing arts and even healthcare systems, including hospitals.

TriHealth is honored to have such a unique group within our health system. Our ATs are a part of our TPP Sports Medicine Department. They work with local colleges and high schools in Cincinnati:

Xavier University
Xavier University Club Sports
Mount St. Joseph University
Clark Montessori High School
Finneytown High School
Franklin County High School
Mason High School
Norwood High School
Roger Bacon High School
Ross High School
Seton High School
St. Xavier High School
The Summit Country Day School
Talawanda High School
Union County High School
Walnut Hills Junior High School
Walnut Hills Senior High School
Withrow High School

TriHealth also has ATs in several other departments working with our physicians as physician extenders in aquatic therapy, physical therapy clinics, the Health & Fitness Pavilion, Event Medicine, and other schools and affiliations through McCollough-Hyde Memorial Hospital.

March is National Athletic Training Month. In honor of this, we would like to thank those Athletic Trainers employed by TriHealth for being an essential part of our healthcare community. Your outreach to our communities is invaluable.

The next time you see an Athletic Trainer running out on the field, educating our patients or coaches, creating a rehabilitation program, or coming up with safety protocols to prevent our patients from harm, please make sure to thank them for their hard work and dedication to the well-being of the community.
