Women's Equality Day is celebrated in the United States on August 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex. In celebration of Women's Equality Month, TriHealth's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion + Belonging (DEI+B) team connected with Dr. Elizabeth Beiter, Associate Program Director for Bethesda Family Medicine, and Jeremiah Kirkland, President and Chief Operating Officer of Bethesda Butler Hospital and Executive for TriHealth Women's Services, for their perspectives on what this celebration means for our team members, physicians and patients.
"On Women's Equality Day we reflect on and celebrate the efforts of many through history and the work still being done to promote equality for women.
At TriHealth, I have been fortunate to be part of many efforts to connect with our community and promote health equity. Specifically, as we celebrate Women's Equality Day, I am so proud to have been a part of efforts to engage mothers and their children in promoting better health while addressing the social determinants of health.
From projects focusing on engaging mothers during their children's well child checks to reduce infant and maternal mortality, to promoting early brain development and early childhood literacy, to efforts to bring food as a health resource into our clinics TriHealth has embraced its role in the community to bring better health outcomes to all members of our community through creative an innovative partnerships."
- Elizabeth Beiter, MD
“Women’s Equality Day commemorates the hard-fought battle for Women’s suffrage in the United States. It serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the importance of empowering women in all aspects of life.
One crucial aspect of women’s equality is health equity, which recognizes that women should have equal access to quality healthcare services, resources, and opportunities for well-being. Achieving health equity for Women is essential because it ensures that all women, regardless of socioeconomic status, race or background, have equal opportunities to lead healthy and fulfilling lives”
- Jeremiah Kirkland
Thank you for commemorating this very important day and the inspiring efforts of those leading out in the recognition of this truly earned freedom. Freedom for one opens up the way for freedom for all. Thank you again! Chaplain Catherine
