Happy Juneteenth!
Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and on June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday. This landmark act further reinforces the national significance of Juneteenth, and its continued importance in shaping our country’s social fabric and ongoing work to ensure that the 150+ year struggle to ensure the promise of equality, civil rights, liberty, and social and racial justice for all is not in vain!
