Update as of August 19, 2020:
The Spiration Valve System (SVS) has now been successfully inserted in the first emphysema patient on Monday, August 17! Olympus Spiration Valves are mainly used for the treatment of severe emphysema, a progressive form of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), but Dr. Ahmed Mostafa was also able to use these valves earlier for complicated ICU patients.
Congrats and thank you to our Endobronchial program at TriHealth!

TriHealth’s Dr. Ahmed Mostafa has performed the first two cases inserting Olympus Spiration Valves into patients at TriHealth last week. The Spiration Valve System (SVS) is mainly for the treatment of severe emphysema, a progressive form of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). While this particular treatment has had a slower start due to the pandemic, Dr. Mostafa was able to do the valve procedure to treat two complicated ICU patients with persistent air leaks in the lung.
The Spiration Valve is an umbrella-shaped device placed in targeted airways of the lung during a short bronchoscopic procedure. Once placed, the valve redirects air away from diseased parts of the lung to the healthier parts, ultimately allowing healthier tissue to function more effectively. Patients who undergo this procedure may experience less breathlessness and fatigue, which results in improved quality of life and often allows them to return to daily activities that became challenging as their symptoms progressed.
The endoscopy team and a couple Olympus representatives were able to assist Dr. Mostafa during these procedures, ensuring a successful result. Dr. Junaid Malik and Omar Hasan, a couple of our TriHealth pulmonologists, are also ready to perform this procedure when needed. Prior to this procedure coming to TriHealth, patients had to be sent to University of Cincinnati for this procedure. We are happy to be able to offer this service to our patients!

Dr. Ahmed Mostafa,
Hello. My name is Monica Hubbard. I am a TriHealth team member. I just wanted to say great job on the Olympus (SCS) valve.
It was great to finally see and hear about the IBV Valve and SVS system. Likewise seeing what happened with air leaks.
When I read this article I was proud of all that hard work it took that paid off by my meeting with and educating medical institutions, physician's, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, nurses, etc. Such a neat medical device. Much success! Monica Hubbard
