January 18, 2021 is the 26th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of America’s most influential and compassionate civil rights leaders. The teachings of Dr. King, and the work he began in the 1960s, changed the nation. His message continues to inspire people of every race, religion and socio-economic class worldwide.
It’s in recognition of Dr. King’s dedication to equality that TriHealth is happy to share that Bethesda Inc., co-sponsor of TriHealth and creator of bi3, approved a $662,500 bi3 grant to TriHealth to accelerate and scale efforts to attract and build a diverse and inclusive workforce, to deliver culturally competent care and reduce health disparities for our community’s underserved populations.
The bi3 grant will help remove barriers to address diversity, equity and inclusion, like funding TriHealth’s participation in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Pursuing Equity Learning and Action Network, the only health system in Ohio to do so, and engagement in the Racial Equity Matters Educational Series which is focused on building understanding and addressing the root causes of racism.
Addressing these systemic health disparities in multiple ways and at every level of the organization – from direct patient care to diverse representation in our workforce to consistently applying cultural competencies in every interaction –will continue to advance TriHealth on our journey to get healthcare right and make TriHealth the best place for all team members to work, for our physicians to practice, and for all members of our community to receive exceptional care.
Within the shining light of Dr. King’s legacy, we begin to plot our path forward to positively impact the health equity of the underserved in our community. We will be marking Dr. King’s movement in order to recognize how far we’ve come as a nation to make diversity, equity and inclusion a part of who we are and acknowledge how much further we have to go to make our ideals a reality for every person in this country.
We encourage you to participate in the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day here at TriHealth and within the community. We’ll be hosting videos and providing you an opportunity to share what his legacy means to you. This week, “I Have a Dream” banners will be posted in the cafes across many of our locations. Take a few minutes to watch his speech and write how Dr. King’s dream has touched your life on the banner in your cafe.
You may also choose to participate in one of the many events being hosted by the Freedom Center. Make a plan to celebrate and invite others to celebrate with you.
At TriHealth, we live and breathe our values. It’s a part of who we are, and it shows in every interaction with our fellow team members, our patients and their loved ones, and the entire community. By focusing on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, and the work enabled by the bi3 grant, we can reflect the rich diversity in our community and ultimately create cultural competencies that result in constructive and trusting interactions between patients and providers to improve population health.

A good number of my staff are requesting that day off because schools and daycares are closed. Last year some centers were closed and others were open. Equity opportunity for Team Members missed.
